Congratulation and welcome to your new little baby! Right after giving birth there is no need for essential oils as the magic of a newborn baby is overwhelming. Enjoy this first time with the new baby - take a lot of time to arrive, to get to know each other and to grow together as a family.
Infections
During the first postpartum period, right after birth, infections are fairly common and essential oils can help to avoid them. It is important to keep the whole genital area clean and to support the healing process. A mixture of water and salt with an essential oil is excellent for this purpose:
4 tablespoon salts
4 drops Lavender true
2 drops Chamomile roman
1 drop Tea Tree
Mix the essential oils to the salt and store it in a small and clean brown glass. Use 1 teaspoon of the mix in the water you use to wash the genital area.
As an alternative method you can also use 2 drops of Lavendel true and let it drip on your sanitary pad. Lavendel true is antiseptic, healing, antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti inflammatory.
During the first weeks postpartum I do not recomment to use essential oils on your body. The baby need your individual scent to recognize you as his/her mother and to feel comfortable. I even recommend to avoid perfumes and strongly scented shampoos. Only use unscented body wash and body lotion.
Baby blues
Emotional ups and downs are totally normal in motherhood and especially as long as you breastfeed. As a mother you go through a lot and you give a lot! The following blend is for mothers who need a boost. It is an all-round blend that helps you to bring you physically and emotionally back to normal:
6 drops Ho wood
5 drops Bergamot
2 drops Frankincense
5 drops Lemon
4 drops Jasmine
Use 3 to 5 drops in 100ml in your diffuser or use 1 drop on a tissue and sniff whenever needed.
If your mind is really foggy due to lack of sleep and tiring days I recommend the following blend:
10 drops Bergamot
2 drops Rosemary
2 drops Eucalyptus radiata
5 drops Lavender true
It can be used as the blend described above.
Postnatal depression
The common baby blues with emotional ups and downs has to be differentiated from the severe postnatal depression that often needs medical support. Essential oils can help you through this challenging time of life.
Choose your essential oils from the following. Use you nose to help you chose; it will help you to decide which essential oils are right for you!
Bergamot
Immortelle
Neroli
Mandarin
Rose otto
Geranium
Clary sage
Rose absolute
Grapefruit
Orange, sweet
Lemon
Ylang Ylang
Use 3 to 5 drops in a room diffuser. It will make you feel special, calm you down, strengthen your nervous system, and, in their own unique way, lift depression.
V. A. Worwood explains: 'Giving birth is not only the most profound chemical change a human body can go through in the space of a few hours, it's also the most profound social change for the mother and will affect every move she makes for the next decade, at least'.
Feeling tired, exhausted and at the same time overwhelmed by all the feelings you have is absolutely normal. Try the suggested essential oils and they will help you to find your emotional balance.
